News › French TGV Breaks World Record (Again) of Rail Track Speed
science
April 3, 2007 - (Harari.org) - Rail Track Trains. At VERY High Speeds. There can be only One World Record Holder for track speed.

The French rail company, la Societe Nationale des Chemins de Fer or SNCF, which owns the Train a Grande Vitesse (TGV) high speed rail train, and which is manufactured by the Alstom company, has beaten its old record for speed of a train on metal tracks. While it may not exactly be rocket science, train speed science is indeed a complex endeavor.

Here's a video clip of the TGV breaking the world record for speed of a rail-based train.

Campagne d'essais pour battre le record du monde de vitesse. Nouveau record a 574.8 km/h (356 mph)

Test Run to beat the world record of speed for a rail track train. New record at 574.8 km/h (356 mph) !!!

Read More for more details.

The TGV train and its track, which was modified to handle the extra speed during the high speed test, had typically been able to carry passengers comfortably at 300 kh/m. The TGV broke its previous world record by a wide margin (more than 12% faster than the previous record it set in 1990). The new record also came within 7 km/h of the absolute train speed record of Japan's MAGLEV (Magnetic Levitation) train, SNCF will now be able to carry its passengers safely at speeds up to 320 km/h.

According to the designer of the Alstom company, the French TGV has about 1,500 km of track capable of carrying up to 500 passengers at a time. Furthermore, the designer has stated that the TGV has so far in its lifetime safely carried over 1.5 Billion passengers along its high speed rails, without so much as one single accident. According to the designer, passengers travelling at 320 km/h will remain well within the safety margins of the train, knowing it can even travel 200 km/h faster than its cruising speed.

The modified TGV was powered by two engines

The French high-speed train (TGV) used for the speed test, smashed the world record for a train on rails by a big margin, reaching 574.8km/h (356mph).

The previous TGV record was 515km/h (320mph), set in 1990.

The record setting speed test by a modified TGV took place on a track between Paris and the eastern city of Strasbourg.

The absolute train speed record was set by a Japanese magnetic levitation train - Maglev - in 2003. It reached 581km/h (361mph).

The TGV set the new record at 1314 (1114GMT) on Tuesday. It was a modified version called V150, with larger wheels than usual and two engines driving three double-decker cars.

Key TGV Specs:
Train Type: V150 TRAIN
Two engines - one at each end
Three double-decker cars
Three motorised bogies
Power output: more than 25,000 horsepower
Cost: 30m euros (£22m; $40m)

The four nations which have high speed trains are: France (a track train), Germany (a track train), Japan (a MAGLEV train), and China (a MAGLEV train). The Chinese train actually is the world's fastest train in terms of carrying passengers. It cruises normally at over 430 km/h, well above the French, German and even Japanese high speed trains.

Here are some facts about the world's four high speed train systems:
France uses the TGV. Created by Alstom and put into service in 1981, the TGV can cruise up to 320 km/h.

Japan uses the Shinkansen which is a MAGLEV train (meaning it floats on a magnetic field instead of riding full contact along a steel rail track like conventional trains). Built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Hitachi and Nippon Sharyo, it was launched in 1964. It cruises at 300 km/h.

Germany uses the InterCityExpress. Created by a consortium led by Siemens, it has been used since 1991. It currently travels at 300 km/h.

China uses the Transrapid. This MAGLEV train was built by Siemens and ThyssenKrupp, which rides between Shanghai and Pudong, can attain speeds of 430 km/h.
